I was graphic designer and sub-editor for Hackney today from 2008-2011, and was responsible for creating original page designs from scratch, as well as researching, writing, checking and editing copy. I was accountable for pre-press work on PDFs and photographs, and during periods as acting editor, I managed a team of four staff, as well as freelance photographers.
I oversaw a redesign of the paper in 2010, bringing it in line with new council branding guidelines and revitalising its overall look.
I also supported and trained community and youth groups in the area so that they could promote their projects by writing their own stories and submitting photos of their events.
In 2011 – after being shortlisted for three consecutive years – Hackney Today won a national best council newspaper award from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).
